Puyallup Celebrates Black History Month

The Washington state city of Puyallup has declared February 2023 "Black Month" in honor of African-American leaders who are "positively empowering others in their respective industries," per the city's proclamation.

But one of those leaders, Judge Clarence Henderson, Jr., isn't so sure he'll get the honor.

The News Tribune reports the Pierce County Superior Court judge, who is black, was appointed to the bench by Gov.

Jay Inslee in 2020.

Henderson has "demonstrated leadership and empowerment by inspiring African-Americans, and people of color to pursue a career in law," according to the proclamation.

He has also "served as an example of what is possible through hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of justice."

Henderson, who is white, was appointed to the Pierce County Superior Court by Inslee in 2020.

He was also appointed to the Washington State Investment Advisory Board by Gov.

Christine Gregoire and to the Washington State Investment Commission by Gov.

Chris Gregoire.

He has also "devoted himself to civil rights cases" and "advocated statewide for access to justice, community ecosystems, and access to education," according to the proclamation.

But he's not so sure he'll get the honor.
